I went to Silver Creek on Friday, August 14, and hauled mud out of a basement for a few hours. I must be getting old, I feel like I did it for a few days!

The owner of the first house I worked at had been digging out by himself for four days-- the water in his basement had been up to the ceiling joists,

and when it receded, it left one-and-a-half feet of mud behind. He was extremely grateful to have help, especially as he was having to take time off work, which he could ill afford. The folks at a second house I worked at were in their 80s, and couldn't do much to help themselves.

There were not many volunteers, yet. Although I spoke with one person who had come from East of Rochester, I think most of the folks are local at this point. I didn't see any National Guard, and heard that they are working in Gowanda which was hit much worse than Silver Creek.

I am glad I went, and I expect I'll be going again. The word is that there will be plenty to do for a long time to come, so no worries that you haven't been able to make it yet.

A Note to Reporters

When writing about our bishop:

On first reference it is proper to use
"The Right Rev. R. William Franklin."

On subsequent references, use
"Bishop Franklin."

Also note:

“Episcopal” is an adjective.
“Episcopalian” is a noun.

An Episcopalian is someone who belongs
to the Episcopal Church.

It is incorrect to refer to Episcopalians
as "Episcopals" or to refer to the Episcopal
Church as "the Episcopalian Church."

Check our ChurchSpeak glossary for additional information.
