Frequently Asked Questions about Health Insurance PDF  | Print |  E-mail

When can I change my health coverage?

The diocesan insurance group anniversary date is January 1 of each year. This is when you are able to change your insurance coverage from one carrier to another, or add additional coverage such as dental.

If you are a new employee, the insurance carrier requires 30 days notice for a new add. For example, if you are a new employee and notify us before September 1st of your desire to pick up health insurance through the diocese, you will be added as of October 1st.

How do I cancel my health insurance coverage?

We require 30 days written notification before a cancellation. You must send this notification in writing to the diocesan office at 1114 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14209, Attn: Health Insurance.

For example, if you notify us before September 1, we will cancell your coverage as of October 1.

If you are cancelling because you resigned or were let go for any reason, the congregation that employed you is responsible, at your expense, for providing continuation of coverage under the COBRA Act.

When is my payment due to the diocesan office?

Invoices are billed on a monthly basis, usually the first week of the month. Your payment is due upon receipt of your invoice.

Direct Pay Clients:

The diocesan office bills you, usually in advance, and these invoices are due upon receipt. You must pay within the month of the service for the insurance. If you have not paid by the end of month, you are in danger of cancellation.

Normally during the second month, if your account is past due, you will be sent a notice that cancellation is imminent. If your payment is in arrears, do not wait for this notice to keep your account current.

When an account is in arrears, the diocese does not pay for a third month out of pocket. It is diocesan policy to notify the insurer that you have dropped. To reinstate your coverage, you will need to pay the amount in arrears and then wait until the group’s anniversary date for your coverage to resume.

When if I have run into difficulty and am unable to make my payment?

If pastoral considerations are required, please contact the Bishop or the Bishop’s representative. Financial aid may be available.

The Financial Office does not carry insurance-related receivables and does not provide coverage at less than cost.
