Interim Priest/Interim Rector ~ A cleric appointed to serve as temporary rector of a parish, often while the congregatgion is in search for a new permanent rector.

Institution ~ Special service, during which a cleric or lay person is made the official bearer of a office or position; a service at which an already consecrated bishop is instituted as bishop of a diocese.

Jesse's Children ~ An ecumenical medical mission in the Dominican Republic cosponsored by the Dioceses of Western New York and Southwest Florida.

Junior Warden ~ Assistant to the Senior Warden; usually becomes Senior Warden after the sitting Senior Warden's term ends.

Journey to Adulthood ~ A six year Christan formation program for youth ages 12 to 18.

Kairos ~ A conversion and renewal program, similar to cursillo, designed especially for prison settings.

Kerygma ~ An organization that publishes a variety of Bible Study aids.

Laity ~ the non-ordained members of a church; all lay persons together; "the people" as distinguished from "the clergy".

Lambeth Conference ~ A conference of all bishops of the Anglican Communion held once every ten years, traditionally in England, and named for the location at which it was first held.

Lambeth Quadrilateral ~ In 1888 the world's Anglican bishops, meeting at Lambeth in England adopted four articles as essentials in any plan of union with other Christian bodies: The Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, the Apostles' and Nicene creeds, the sacraments of baptism and holy communion, and the historic episcopate (see Apostolic Succession).

Lay ~ from laios, a Greek word meaning the people.

Lay person ~ any non-ordained person; see Laity.

Lectionary ~ Daily scripture readings designated for use in the Episcopal Church. The lectionary follows a two year cycle.

Lectionary, Revised Standard ~ Daily scripture readings designated for use in the Episcopal Church approved for use by General Convention in 2003. The lectionary follows a two year cycle.

Lector ~ A person trained in the reading of the Word and appointed without license by a member of the clergy in charge of the congregation to read scripture lessons during a worship service.

Lent ~ A period of 40 days from Ash Wednesday through Palm Sunday that recalls the period of Christ's fasting and meditation in the wilderness. The term "Lent" is derived from an old word for 'lengthen' which referred to the lengthening days of early sping.

Lesson & Carols
~ Name of service usually held during Advent  that consists of scriture readings and the singing of popular carols.

Lesson ~ Any reading from the Bible except the Gospels or Psalms, sometimes referred to as the epistle..

Licensed Clergy ~ Clergy functioning in a diocese by permission of the bishop of that diocese while canonically resident in a differenct diocese.

Liturgical Three Hours ~ The period of time between noon and 3 p.m. on Good Friday commemorating the period of time Christ suffered on the cross.

Liturgy ~ A worship service.

Living Stones ~ An annual international conference of dioceses involved in baptismal ministry.
