When Diocesan Convention meets for the 171st time later this month,
delegates will consider resolutions concerning the life of the diocese
as well as current events.
TransitionOrderly transition to our next bishop is the focus of a resolution proposed by the Standing Committee. Bishop Garrison’s announcement last year of his plans to retire in April 2011 prompted the resolution. Passage of the resolution is needed to set planning for an orderly transition in motion.Youth LeadershipOur church canons set the voting age for anyone wishing to be involved in the leadership of the Church at 16. The NYS Religious Corporations Law, however, sets the voting age 18.A resolution coming before convention this year seeks to win approval for our diocese to request that our local state senators and assembly members to sponsor an amendment changing the age specified in the Religious Corporations Act to 16, thereby bringing it in line with The Episcopal Church canons. Health InsuranceThis resolution, if passed, will authorize Diocesan Council to consider selecting The Episcopal Church Medical Trust (ECMT) as provider of the diocesan group health insurance plans. The goal is to achieve long-term cost containment by becoming part of a larger buying group, which will have advantages of increased bargaining power and decreased administrative burden.Created by General Convention in 1978, ECMT seeks to balance “compassionate Christian care with financial stewardship” and currently underwrites health insurance for 70+ dioceses. Current EventsThe WNY Chapter of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship will bring two resolutions before Convention. One asks the diocese to advocate on behalf of veterans returning from current conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. The second calls for the closing of the Guantanamo Prison.
