Confirmation is defined by the Book of Common Prayer as a "mature public affirmation" of faith (p. 412). In order to be confirmed, you must first be baptized. Baptism as the sacrament by which you become a Christian. Confirmation in the Episcopal Church is the sacrament by which you formally acknowledge your relationship to our specific denomination of Christianity. If you have already been confirmed in a different denomination, you may ask the bishop to formally receive you into the Episcopal Church. Specific information regarding age and study requirements for confirmation (or reception) may be obtained from your local parish. Confirmation and reception are both performed by a bishop, through the laying on of hands. Such services in the Diocese of WNY may occur at individual parishes during the Bishop's Visitation or regionally, such as on Ascension Day at St. Paul's Cathedral.
