A Note to Reporters

When writing about our bishop:

On first reference it is proper to use
"The Right Rev. J. Michael Garrison."

On subsequent references, use
"Bishop Garrison."

Also note:

“Episcopal” is an adjective.
“Episcopalian” is a noun.

An Episcopalian is someone who belongs
to the Episcopal Church.

It is incorrect to refer to Episcopalians
as "Episcopals" or to refer to the Episcopal
Church as "the Episcopalian Church."

Check our ChurchSpeak glossary for additional information.
