The Diocese of WNY PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Within our boundaries, approximately 16,000 adult communicants worship in 63 different congregations spread across the counties of Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming at the western edge of New York State. This area of roughly 5423 square miles is bounded on the north by Lake Ontario, on the west by Lake Erie, on the south by Pennsylvania, and on the east by the Diocese of Rochester.

Founded in 1839, the diocese has been served by ten bishops. The Rt. Rev. J. Michael Garrison, our current bishop, was consecrated in April of 1999. Bishop Garrison and the diocesan staff work out of offices located at 1114 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, NY.

The diocesan cathedral, St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, graces the heart of downtown Buffalo at 128 Pearl Street.

As members of the Diocese of Western New York, we are part of The Episcopal Church USA and the worldwide Anglican Communion.

A Note to Reporters

When writing about our bishop:

On first reference it is proper to use
"The Right Rev. J. Michael Garrison."

On subsequent references, use
"Bishop Garrison."

Also note:

“Episcopal” is an adjective.
“Episcopalian” is a noun.

An Episcopalian is someone who belongs
to the Episcopal Church.

It is incorrect to refer to Episcopalians
as "Episcopals" or to refer to the Episcopal
Church as "the Episcopalian Church."
